Jihad In Perspective of The Glorious Qur'an - Part 1

  • So in this topic we are going to cover the word jihad in Qur'an perspective.
  • First of all Allah says in the Qur'an in chapter 4 verse 75 and chapter 8 verse 72, In which Allah allows people to fight for their rights.

  • Chapter 4 verse 75
  • And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from yourself a protector and appoint for us from  yourself a helper"?

  • Chapter 8 verse 72

  •  Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided- they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate- for you there is no guardianship of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves  and whom is a treaty. And Allah is seeing of what you do.

  • Now you might ask what kind of rights Allah(swt) is talking about.
  • For example, The right to live, to have your property. If those kinds of rights have been served. then people have the right to fight back.
  • Then after this the passage which we are going to study that is about the ethics and rules of fighting.
  • What should you aware of while you are fighting
  • The passage are in surah baqarah varse 190 to 194
  • "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress Indeed,Allah does  not like transgressors"
  • "And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have           expelled you and fitnah is worse than killing and do not fight them at Al-masjid-Al  haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers"
  •   "And if they cease, then indeed Allah is forgiving and merciful"
  •   "Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until]worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors"

  •   "[Fighting in] the sacred month is for aggression committed in the sacred month, and for [all] violation is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear him

  • So in these verses we can see as it contains many restrictions and are couched in restraining language that appeals strongly to the conscience.
  • One time Allah says until meaning is don't fight until. We will try to study this further.
  • And four times he says [if] if this then you can fight.
  • Means you cannot just fight conditions have to be fulfilled.
  • Twice[those who fight you] meaning you cannot just fight, you can only fight those who fight you and that occur twice in just 4 ayat.
  • And on top of that other cautionary measures like Allah's way be mindful of Allah, Allah does not love those who cross limits Allah is with those who are mindful of him who do good Allah is forgiving Allah is merciful.
  • Means so if they stop you should stop over and over so even when he talks about fighting he does not say like just kill everyone.
  • He says like wait you have to be conscious of Allah only fight with those who aggress against you, don't cross the limits, don't go overboard or they kill one of yours, you are going to drop a bomb and kill a thousand people.
  • No its not like that, Allah says No you are not going to do that.
  • So as we can see the ethics are very restrictive.

Wherever you counter them kill them this one Ayah.

  • This one ayah the evangelicals love it. They say"Their Qur'an says they are going to find us wherever we are if muslims are truly muslims they would be killing us right now"
  • That's what you hear
  • But that is taken out of context. I will talk about this in detail when time comes.
  • It actually says that if they fight against you and you are even at the "Kaaba" you can still fight back against them.
  • Now wherever was in the context of may even fight them at the Kaaba that was what Allah said
  • Because the muslims said how can we fight in a sacred land?
  • But Allah says what they are doing is worse, the Kaaba must be liberated also if they fight you at the Kaaba, I am giving you the permission to fight, That's my Kaaba. That's what Allah says.

      The Invasion Of Makkah.

  • The justified war should never be disproportionate the conquest of Makkah. By the way when did the prophet (saw) invade Makkah?
  • He invaded Makkah when the treaty of hudaibiya was violated, Think about that.
  • The prophet (saw) never actually invaded Makkah outside of the context of peace treaty being violated.
  • It was actually never a war directly against Makkah, it never happened.

      The Ayah of sword.

  • There is something called the Ayah of the sword famously known as the (Ayatu-saif). The Ayah of the sword.
  • It is in the Surah Tauba and it is the ninth Surah of the Qur'an and it is one of the last Surah to be revealed.
  • So some people believe because that is if you must continue to fight the last thing Allah said must be the most applicable and their view was that because it's the last thing that was said it cancels out everything that was before.
  • So the universal policy of Islam from now on will be we must continue to fight and we are going to fight until there shake in the world.
  • And the basis of that is these ayat came in Surah Tauba.
  • So for anybody who has like Jihadi mindset. The Jihadi mindset means Jihad must go on all over the world wherever the muslims can do it until all ship has been destroyed.
  • The root of it, the interpretation of it is on the basis of Ayat of Surah Tauba.
  • That's where it comes from actually its a wrong interpretation.
  • I will continue in my next blog from here. If you have any questions about this feel free to ask. I will try my best to answer.
